Keystone Science School strives to meet our mission through the motto, “Science, Adventure, FUN!” This summer we are introducing a new program focused on broadening our campers’ perspective through the game of golf. In our world, we often look to play, have fun, and be outside within our recreational activities. There are times that our hobbies and activities can sometimes be a detriment to our natural habitats. Golf is a game that often gets a bad reputation when it comes to environmental stewardship. They are often seen as a green oasis in the middle of the desert, a flattening of the landscape when trees are cut for new courses and a massive spreading of chemicals to make grass grow, be green, and stand up to shifting temperatures throughout the summer. While golf can have a negative effect on some environments there are strategies golf courses and superintendents can take to create and maintain golf courses in harmony with local environments.
Keystone Resort Golf and Keystone Science School is partnering for the summer of 2017 to live our motto of Science, Adventure Fun through the game of golf. Campers will learn about the physics of golf, mechanics of a golf swing, and the responsibility and strategies to maintain a golf course with the environment in mind. These activities will happen while working with the PGA professionals for Keystone Resort Golf. The Keystone Ranch Course is a perfect location for this program due to their current practices on course management through their partnership with Audubon International and the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. According to Tara Donadio, Director of Cooperative Sanctuary Programs for Audubon International, “one of the main priorities and categories for certification is outreach and education. Outreach can be defined by educating golfers on the course’s sustainability practices or inviting the community to test water or participate in bird walks.”
Keystone Science School’s Nova Golf Camp will explore all the intricacies of the course management strategies put in place by Keystone Resort Golf after following the Audubon International practices. This includes responsible water management to properly manage water quality of the surrounding aquatic ecosystems and reviewing the practices in place to minimize the water used when irrigating their course.
Nova Golf Camp will also look at the unique wildlife habitat and migration corridors created by the Keystone Ranch Golf Course. While golf courses are not a native landscape they do preserve the land as open space free from housing developments and shopping centers. When courses are designed similar to the Keystone Ranch course they can become a rich habitat for wildlife, specifically birds. Nova Camp will explore native mammal and bird habitats comparing their findings to what they see at the Keystone Ranch Course. Following this comparison campers will make their own recommendations about how to improve those habitats.
Woven within the teaching about course layout to preserve the native environment campers will learn about the human body and the science of a golf swing. With the help of Keystone Resort PGA professionals, campers will learn about the foundations of a golf swing and how they can work towards swing mastery.
Here at Keystone Science School we’re excited for this new partnership with our friends at Keystone Resort for this new day camp program. At the close of the program campers will have a broadened perspective of the game of golf. They will for the remaining of their golf playing career have a better understanding of golf course design and all it takes to manage a golf course.
