First-Time Camper Friendly, No Prior Experience Necessary

Choosing the right camp is about a lot more than daily schedules and age groups. If you’re like most parents, you aren’t just looking at the itinerary. You’re asking the hard questions:
- Will they make friends?
- Will they actually have fun?
- What if they get nervous?
- What if they don’t know a single person there?
These are the exact questions families ask when they first look at Keystone Science School (KSS).So, before we talk about trails, tents, or activities, we want you to know the single most important thing about us: No matter which KSS program your camper joins, our primary goal is to make sure they feel cared for, included, and genuinely happy to be here.
The “New Kid” is Normal Here

Nearly half of our campers are brand new to KSS. Being the new kid isn’t the exception; it’s the rule.
Every summer, kids arrive with a whole spectrum of emotions. Some jump out of the car and some hang back, while others are a tangled mix of thrilled and terrified.
We don’t just expect this. We plan for it.
The first day of every KSS program is built from the ground up to break the ice, ease nerves, and forge immediate connections. These early friendships are the engine for the confidence and fun that follow.
Your child does not need to show up already “camp ready.” They don’t need prior outdoor experience. They don’t need to be naturally outgoing or fiercely independent. They don’t need to have this whole thing figured out before they get here.
They just need a safe place to start.
Finding the Right Next Step

The beauty of KSS is that you don’t have to map out your child’s entire camp trajectory today. You just need to find the step that feels right for them right now.
For many families, the perfect launchpad is Day Camp. Designed for Kindergarten (5 yrs+) through 5th grade; it gives kids the magic of camp during the day, and the comfort of their own bed at night.
But when they start getting curious about what happens after the sun goes down, we have gentle ways to test the waters:
The Tuesday Sleepover: A low-stakes first step. Day campers get to try a single night away from home in a familiar setting, surrounded by the staff they trust and the friends they’ve already made.

Intro to Discovery Camp (4-Day Session): Not quite ready for a full week away? This shorter session is designed specifically for younger kids trying their very first sleepaway camp. It features the same great schedule as our traditional Discovery Camp, just condensed to fit exactly what a first-timer needs.
Bridging the Gap: Our Transition Programs
As kids grow, their appetite for adventure grows with them. But jumping from a traditional summer camp straight into the deep wilderness can feel intimidating.
That is why we specifically designed “transition programs” to bridge the gap and teach them the ropes:
Intro to Backpacking (6 Days): Tailored entirely for beginners. Campers head into the White River National Forest to learn the absolute essentials: setting up a tent, backcountry cooking, water filtration, and wilderness hygiene. They get to paddleboard, explore, and—most importantly—build the confidence they need to thrive outdoors.

Tents to Trails (12 Days): The ultimate bridge from Discovery Camp to our bigger Adventures. Week one is spent on the KSS campus building bonds and enjoying traditional camp magic in our Discovery Camp Program. In week two, they seamlessly transition into the Summit County wilderness for rock climbing, paddleboarding, and an unforgettable three-day overnight canoe trip with our adventure program. (Offered twice this summer!)
The Broader Progression

When your camper is finally ready to dive all the way in, the broader KSS progression is waiting:
- Discovery Overnight (2nd–8th Grade): A traditional, immersive full-week overnight camp experience.
- Pathfinders (6th–8th Grade): A specialized day camp for middle schoolers ready to hone specific outdoor skills.
- Adventures (5th–12th Grade): Real wilderness expeditions for campers hungry for bigger offsite challenges.
- Counselor Assistant Program / CAP (9th–12th Grade): For teens ready to step up, lead, and create the same camp magic for younger kids that changed their own lives.
There is no “right” path. There is only the path that works for your child.
A Place to Belong
Camp looks different for every child. A first-timer might be conquering their homesickness and learning how to filter water. A veteran camper might be leading a hike and stepping into their own independence. Both experiences matter. Both are celebrated here.
Your child doesn’t need a resume of outdoor experience to belong at KSS. They just need a place where they are welcomed in, cared for, and completely free to grow.
