Girls in STEM: Wildlife Crossings

October 17-19, 2025

We are excited to launch a new theme, Girls in STEM Wildlife Crossings! Over the course of the weekend, participants will explore how different careers collaborate to research and design wildlife crossings. They will meet birds of prey, visit a wildlife overpass, and learn how to use motion activated cameras to study wildlife. To wrap up the weekend, participants will collaborate with a team to design their own wildlife overpass.

This program is created in partnership with two of the researchers who helped establish wildlife crossings north of Silverthorne on Highway 9. The project was led by an almost all-female team and the main inspiration for this program! 2025 STEM Mentors

Throughout the weekend, a variety of female professionals will be working with the students to build their understanding of Wildlife Crossings and the jobs that make them happen!

Patricia Cramer

Founder of the Wildlife Connectivity Institute

Dr. Patty Cramer grew up loving animals and made a career of protecting wildlife. She began her animal journey first with dog and cat pets, then expanded her animal family to pet raccoons and horses. She majored in wildlife for her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and PhD. She began down the transportation ecology road when she volunteered in Florida to help other ecologists and Florida Department of Transportation build wildlife crossings to help turtles, snakes, alligators, and many other animals cross safely beneath a highway. That eventually led to her research at the national level on understanding the effects of roads and vehicles on wildlife, what the different states were doing for wildlife, and conducting field research at wildlife crossing structures. She is the founder and director of the Wildlife Connectivity Institute, an organization that helps promote science and actions to reduce wildlife-vehicle conflict and protect and restore wildlife movement across the landscape. Over the past 21 years she has monitored over 100 wildlife crossing structures, which helped and continues to help Departments of Transportation in designing the most effective structures for a variety of wildlife species. Her work with more than 15 different states also focuses on bringing data to transportation professionals so they include wildlife concerns in their road plans. Dr. Cramer is a national leader in wildlife mitigation in the face of roads.

Julia Kintsch

Founder of Eco-resolutions

Julia Kintsch grew up in Colorado where she was ingrained with a deep love of nature. She served in the Peace Corps in West Africa and, following a career in non-profit conservation, founded ECO-resolutions with the goal of minimizing and mitigating impacts to wildlife and ecosystems from human activity and infrastructure. She is a nationally-recognized expert in transportation ecology and has helped to build wildlife crossings in Colorado and other states to protect both wildlife and drivers. Julia loves adventuring in the Colorado Rockies and exploring the mountains on a mountain bike, skis, or on foot.
